As a little kid, I always snickered at the nudes that hung in my grandparent’s house. Later, I would find out how important the human form was and is to art. My grandfather’s piece struck a chord with me for two reasons: 1) because of how my grandfather chose to render the female forms and 2) because of the element in the foreground that manipulates the colors behind it. Going back to my early childhood days, I always drew faceless people and now I wonder was this subconscious or did my grandfather’s nudes directly influence me to do the same. For this study, I chose to recreate the foreground element but change the positioning of the nudes and I used the color scheme my grandfather used, but just with my brighter palette to overall give an actual sense of a new interpretation of the same space.

My grandfather hung his painting (below) in his red-tiled studio, exactly opposite to the wall he faced when he painted. This painting never moved from as early as I can remember, so it must have held a very important place in his heart and creativity. I used to get lost in the woods and always wondered who was walking in the foreground. I wanted to copy the positioning of the trees, but change the colors like the seasons passing, which carries both a literal and symbolic meaning. I like to think the person walking in the woods is my grandfather, and now he walks on my paintings.

My grandparents did not live too far away, just a few towns, but it was far enough to only see them periodically. My grandma was a wonderful cook and I still do not understand how she could make scrambled eggs taste so good. I loved to watch her cook. This painting by my grandpa is only one of a handful of dark, cubist style pieces and it was prominently featured above the kitchen table. So I would sit at the table my grandfather built, next to this painting and waited patiently for grandma’s cooking! My grandpa’s piece literally combined many of his passions: flowers, Europe and carpentry among others. I just wanted to use his piece as a roadmap, but in place of his green I would use my green, in place of his blue, I would use my blue and so on and so forth.
